How to start a conversation, about getting older…….and where to live?

Starting a conversation about getting older and changing where you live is never going to be easy, especially not in these Covid 19 days……

I think we started with a casual remark about us looking after my mum, but this was when she was fit and healthy we couldn’t do it now as she approaches 90!!

We have been chatting together and the following are questions and possible ways of starting conversations about changing, who knows and however you do it, just do it it will be worth it in the end!

1. Mum, dad have you ever thought about where you are going to live when you are in your 70’s 80’s or 90’s?

2. Would you consider help from a professional person giving you ideas and options about where to live.

3. Would you find a website, newsletter, email, home visit or book useful to help you in your moving choice.

4. How would you find a plumber, electrician, architect or builder today.

5. Do you use the internet or is there someone who can help you get on it and search for stuff about new housing.

6. Have you ever heard of Multi Generational Living Spaces – do you know what they are.

7. What would you call a room or space housing an elderly relative

8. Have you ever thought about downsizing – do you know what it is?

9. Do you have family living near you and any grandchildren – do you see them enough.

10. Do you think joint living interests them – has it ever been mentioned

11. What might you do in the future if your health changes or your mobility as you age?

12. Would you consider living with your relatives in some way?

13. Shall we talk more about this over the coming days….

Hope this has started a conversation for you, would love to hear your answers and feedback if it was useful.
