Emergency planning for a granny annex – great rules to follow!!

We have recently been away camping for a few days and left my mum alone in her annex with her dog – what could go wrong!

A few days into our holiday and just about to settle into a good pizza and beer when her friend phoned my wife – I do not posses a phone!

We could not hear her as the burglar alarm was going so loud in the background.

The reason it had been set of is her best friend had come into our house to locate the pole that closes the roof light I left open!

How daft you may say but I was rushing and did not check the windows

Over the phone with a battery about to die I had to explain how to switch of the alarm which was not easy

The new rules I will now follow are:

Get a phone, keep it charged and load with all needed contact numbers

Agree a plan of action with mum and her friends should anything happen, how to get in touch in the event of an emergency

Agree to where keys will be kept

Check the annex before you leave for any length of time – take time – do not rush!

Do not lock up things mum might need whilst away

Check again the annex inside and out make sure you are happy and my mum is too before leaving

I would be grateful for any other tips people have about being away and helpful ideas?

thanks
