Our granny annex top tips – No5 & 6 use qualified and experienced people

One of my things that I learn’t the value of even more whilst doing the annex build Number 5 & 6 was the importance of using qualified people and experienced people.

Time and again during the 30 plus years I have been working building extensions and refurbishing properties I have found that many of the problems and difficulties come about when people doing the work are either not suitably qualified or not suitably experienced.

In order to help give you the confidence in using me to help your project I come with lots of both:

I have gained experience working all over the country, in central London on both very expensive house refurbishment projects in Regents Park and Harley Street, but also in other less well known parts of the capital. I have worked for The Ministry Of Defence building them new houses, various religious organisations, with one of the most rewarding projects turning an old church into a refuge for vulnerable women in Bournemouth, might not sound relevant to annex building but gained lots of the experience here working on a very tricky project.

I have built and managed houses and flats for lots of housing associations and local councils and built and managed the building of extensions and granny annexes for numerous private customers.

Along side this is lots of qualifications I have taken and gained during this time.

I started out on a 6 month intensive bricklaying course gaining bricklaying qualifications and learning the basics of setting out and building houses – this lead to getting various City & Guild certificates.

From this I worked with small builders and on my own extending houses and working on and around small building projects.

Working for a local college lead me to a year long detailed management course on lots of sites and gained further Advanced Craft Certificates in managing the sites.

One of the tutors on this course suggested that as I had worked very hard why not try to get on a university course. This I did and managed to get on, it was a 4 year course which involved me working for the 3 companies building and managing house projects and which i completed successfully and gained an honours degree.

Following on from this I have undertaken lots of smaller courses over the years with getting Membership Of The Chartered Institute of Builders being the best one yet

From their website using someone who is MCIOB qualified means

not just the  prestige but more important is the evidence it offers that a manager has a deep understanding of their discipline and a broad knowledge of related fields. And if they have reached chartered status, an employer knows their competencies have been verified and guaranteed by a chartered body with 180 years’ experience of doing just that.and all throughout this career using qualified and experienced people has been the one of the main keys to success.
