Our granny annex top tips – No7 door opening sizes
It wasn’t until a little while after we had finished the main annex building that I realised how good it was to have large door openings, not just the front and back doors but the inside house doors to bedrooms and kitchens etc.
Now this might not seem much of an issue to people, you might think there are lots of other more important points but what I am trying to do on MGLSpaces is share a variety of issues and points that we have learnt [along with others] to help you learn and benefit from us and to help prevent some of the mistakes we made.
Now back to door size choices; to people who have no idea what I am on about here I mean the size of the door opening through into say the bedroom or bathroom and there are a number of choices, particularly if you are building new or refurbishing.
The 4 main sizes which in old inch measurements are as follows: 2 feet wide, 2 feet 3 inch, 2 feet 6 inch and 2 feet 9 inch’s. If you get a tape measure and open it out you can see the differences or measure what you have already, a few inches might not seem much but it can make quite a difference.
Now when we were building we made sure the route from the outside to the bedroom was to have the largest door size possible a 2’9″ in order to get a medical bed in from outside if required for my mum.
But as we were looking at it we decided to make them all larger in the house as it made it easier for mum to get around. It also mean’t a wheelchair could get around if needed and one of the things which really surprised me most was how easy it made life when moving stuff around, furniture, sofas, beds etc were so much easier to shift without bashing your fingers and enabling you to get whatever you wanted into any room.
So although this does not sound like a real biggy on the decision front, it does have some massive knock on benefits, so worth thinking about early on to make your doors as wide as possible and it will also not have much effect on the budget as doors do not vary that much in price for wider ones.
