Different ways to create new living space – double garage into living space

Another way to make space available more simply is to use what you have got in the house already without the need to build new.

This project used an integral double garage which was taken out of use and replaced by living space.

Now it might seem unlikely that you can get what you need in such a small space but you can, and what was created was easily sufficient for one.

The old double garage door was removed and blocked up with a cavity wall. The floor had to be taken up below to ensure there was a foundation but this was there from the original build and the wall could be built of it.

A bay window was added into this wall to provide a bit of interest and make more room.

Another window was cut into the front wall to provide natural light to a small kitchenette, which had a sink.

The rear of the garage became the bedroom upgrading the old window which was there to a new plastic one, with all the walls boarded and plastered.

The most difficult job was to find the old sewer pipe under the floor [with some digging] and to create a single shower room and separate toilet.

The garage had a door into the kitchen originally and this was kept for the relative to come and go into the main house and share the kitchen when required.
